5 Days in Christchurch, New Zealand

Christchurch is a reminder that not every destination needs to be fast-paced to be unforgettable. Situated on New Zealand’s South Island, the city blends classic English elegance with modern Kiwi innovation. Creating a space where gardens, creativity, and nature coexist in quiet harmony. It’s a place that invites you to slow down, and rewards you when you do.

Spending five days in Christchurch gave us the time to settle into its rhythm. Instead of rushing from highlight to highlight, we balanced calm city moments with powerful natural experiences: coastal hikes, mountain train journeys, garden strolls, and unhurried afternoons enjoying local wine and conversation. Each day felt intentional, present, and deeply satisfying.

Day 1: A Garden Welcome & Dining in a Church

We arrived in Christchurch in the early afternoon and, eager to stretch our legs after the journey, set off on foot to explore.

North Hagley Park

We were lucky our hotel was just a short walk from North Hagley Park, one of the city’s most beautiful green spaces. The wide, tree-lined paths and peaceful atmosphere made it the perfect introduction to Christchurch.

Double Decker Bikes

With its wide open green spaces, peaceful walking paths, and natural beauty, it quickly became one of our favorite spots in the city.

As we strolled through the North part of the park, pausing to watch golfers tee off on the Hagley Golf Course, we found ourselves slowing down, breathing deeper, and feeling more present.

It was a beautiful reminder that moments of calm and connection can shift your mindset and set the tone for the day ahead.

Miniature Sailboat Race

We even came across miniature sailboats racing across Victoria Lake, which was a delightful and unexpected sight!

Miniature Sailboat Race on Victoria Lake.

The group controlling them from the shoreline was fully focused, eyes locked on their tiny vessels as they navigated the course with precision and pride.

It was such a fun reminder that joy can be found in the simplest of passions, and that playfulness doesn’t have an age limit.

Christchurch Botanic Garden

As we continued our walk, we came upon the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and were completely amazed!

The Cunningham House in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.

From the vibrant blooms cascading over trellises to the towering, majestic trees that seemed to tell stories of their own, every corner was a feast for the senses.

The glass-paneled Cunningham House stood proudly among it all, lush and inviting.

We were genuinely in awe of the beauty here! It felt like stepping into a living postcard, and we found ourselves slowing down to take it all in, moment by moment.

Beautiful architecture of Christchurch

Even though Christchurch experienced extensive earthquake damage, the city has rebuilt with remarkable care and creativity.

Today, you’ll find a mix of fascinating modern and historic buildings that reflect its resilient spirit.

The architecture beautifully blends old-world charm with contemporary design, creating a unique and inspiring cityscape.

The Church Brew Pub

We stopped to chat with a few locals along the way, and they recommended we check out The Church Brew Pub for dinner and live music. We were so glad we took their advice!

The Church Brew Pub

The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, the food hit the spot, and the live music made the evening feel extra special.

Everyone we met was incredibly friendly, and it felt like one of those spontaneous travel moments where everything just clicks, and you can’t help but smile.

Day 2: A Stunning Coastal Hike

After such a fun first day, we were excited to gear up for day two!

The incredible breakfast at the DoubleTree

We started our morning at the hotel with an amazing breakfast, and it couldn’t have been more perfect.

With a big hike ahead of us, we appreciated the generous layout!

It was one of those breakfasts that makes you feel taken care of before you’ve even stepped out the door.

Crater Rim to Godley Head Hike

For our first hike in Christchurch, we chose the Crater Rim to Godley Head hike that we found on AllTrails.

The Crater Rim to Godley Head Hike

This 6.9-mile trail offered sweeping coastal views and wide open skies that made every step feel like a postcard moment.

It took us about 3 hours to complete at a comfortable pace.

This hike was the perfect balance of challenge and reward, and easily one of our favorite hikes in Christchurch!

If you’re looking to explore new hikes and want detailed trail info right at your fingertips, we highly recommend using AllTrails. You can sign up HERE online and download the app before your trip. It’s an excellent tool for finding hikes that match your interests, fitness level, and time frame. Plus, best of all, it helps keep you on the right path every step of the way!

The Beach and then Lunch in Sumner

Our hike ended on the beach, and we were genuinely stunned!

Beautiful beach at the end of our hike.

Just when we thought the views couldn’t get any better, they did!

After all the beauty we’d taken in along the trail, stepping onto the sand with the ocean stretching out before us felt like a perfect, unexpected finale.

It was one of those magical travel moments where nature just keeps outdoing itself.

After spending a little time soaking in the sea breeze and coastal views, we called an Uber and headed to the charming seaside town of Sumner, and we’re so glad we did!

With its charm, sparkling ocean views, and inviting cafés, Sumner was an absolute delight. We discovered a cozy spot for lunch and savored classic fish and chips along with a refreshing glass of wine. A very satisfying meal that felt like the perfect reward after a morning spent exploring the trails.

Christchurch Central City

When we got back to our hotel, we still had enough energy to explore more of the City Centre. So we walked through North Hagley Park again.

Kayakers on Avon River

As we neared the Avon River, we spotted kayakers gliding peacefully along the water.

It was such a relaxing scene, and it gets even better! You can even take a Punt ride on a classic flat-bottomed boat, gently guided down the river by a punter in traditional Edwardian attire.

Tram Ride and Dinner

Christchurch is full of fantastic restaurants, so deciding where to eat can be hard to choose!

Christchurch Hop-On Hop-Off Tram

One of the best ways to get your bearings and spot places that pique your interest is to hop on the Christchurch Hop-On Hop-Off Tram.

It’s a fun and relaxing way to get the lay of the land, see what catches your eye, and maybe even discover a hidden gem. Plus, you’ll get a great overview of everything else this vibrant city has to offer along the way!

You can get your tickets for the Christchurch Hop-On Hop-Off Tram here.

Day 3: TranzAlpine Train to Arthur’s Pass

After an incredible day of hiking, we were ready to relax our legs! So we hopped on the train and headed up to Arthur’s Pass for a scenic ride through the Southern Alps.

The TranzAlpine Train

We chose the day trip that goes halfway to Arthur’s Pass and back, giving us the perfect chance to enjoy the stunning alpine scenery and explore the pass without committing to the full route.

For travelers seeking a longer adventure, the TranzAlpine continues all the way to the West Coast, offering an unforgettable full-day journey through some of New Zealand’s most dramatic landscapes.

The beauty of New Zealand along the way was truly astounding! Towering mountains, deep valleys, and rolling hills unfolded before us, making every moment of the ride unforgettable.

Arthur’s Pass

Arthur’s Pass was absolutely beautiful! A high-country wonderland nestled among dramatic peaks and alpine charm.

To our surprise (and delight), there was still some snow on the ground, and we couldn’t resist tossing a few playful snowballs at each other before setting off on a couple of short hikes that we found on the AllTrails app.

The Falls on Devil's Punchbowl Walking Track

Our first choice was the Devil’s Punchbowl Walking Track, a well-maintained trail that winds through lush native bush and leads to one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the area.

The sound of the water grew louder with every step, and when we reached the viewing platform, we were stunned! The falls plummet 131 meters (430 feet) in a powerful, misty cascade. It was a breathtaking moment, and the perfect spot for photos.

The crystal-clear water at Arthur's Pass

After that, we explored a second trail that looped around Arthur’s Pass Village, offering peaceful forest paths, sweeping mountain views, and a chance to walk alongside a rushing, crystal-clear mountain stream.

The water was so clear and mesmerizing that we paused on a nearby bench, watching intently to see if we could catch a glimpse of any fish beneath the surface. It was one of those quiet, grounding moments that made us feel fully present.

We dipped our fingers into the icy water, which was refreshing and a little shocking!

There were so many incredible photo opportunities during our train ride, both on the way up to Arthur’s Pass and on the return trip.

From mountain peaks to rolling valleys, every turn seemed to offer another picture-perfect view.

It was honestly hard to choose just one favorite to share with you!

We plan to come back someday and experience the full TranzAlpine journey all the way to the West Coast. If the first leg was this beautiful, we can only imagine what’s waiting on the other side! You can purchase the same train ticket here.

Day 4: Christchurch Gondola

After such an amazing day on the train, we couldn’t wait to see what adventures awaited us next!

Christchurch Gondola

Still energized and eager to explore, we set our sights on the area around the Christchurch Gondola.

You can choose to ride the gondola to the top for sweeping panoramic views. Purchase Gondola tickets HERE.

Bridle Path Walk to Summit Road Viewpoint

We decided to skip the gondola ride and hike up instead, choosing the Bridle Path Walk to Summit Road Viewpoint.

This trail definitely got our heart rate up with its steady incline, but every step was worth it!

As we climbed higher, the views opened up, offering sweeping panoramas of Christchurch, Lyttelton Harbour, and the surrounding hills.

We branched off onto the Crater Rim Walkway and Summit Road Loop, which led us to the top near the Christchurch Gondola. The trail treated us to a mix of steady climbs, rugged terrain, and sweeping panoramic views that made every step worthwhile.

The view out of the window in the small dedication building.

Where the trails branched, we paused to catch our breath and came upon a small building marked with a plaque that read: “On this spot, the pioneer women of Canterbury and their families rested after their climb from the port of Lyttelton and gazed with awe—but with courage—upon the hills and plains of Canterbury where they were to make their home.

Standing there, reading those words, we felt a deep sense of admiration for the strength and courage of those pioneer women.

Their determination to face the unknown and build a new life in an unfamiliar land is a powerful reminder that every new journey, whether across rugged hills or into uncharted personal growth, requires bravery, resilience, and hope.

It inspired us to embrace our own adventures with that same spirit of courage and wonder!

Taking the Crater Rim Walkway and Summit Road Loop to reach the Gondola felt like a true accomplishment.

Standing at the top, taking it all in, was one of those powerful moments that remind you just how rewarding a good challenge can be.

Lyttelton

From the top, we had an incredible view overlooking the town of Lyttelton, with its charming harbor nestled between the hills, and we could even see a cruise ship docked at the port below.

The display details what you are looking at below.

That glimpse sparked our curiosity, so we decided to explore.

We took the Bridle Path Track down the hillside toward Lyttelton, enjoying a scenic and peaceful descent with sweeping views the entire way.

What a fascinating adventure filled with incredible views we discovered throughout our explorations!

Day 5: Waipara Wine Trail Tour

We had always heard that New Zealand wines were something special, so on our fifth day, we decided to experience them for ourselves with a Waipara Wine Trail Tour.

What a fun and flavorful adventure!

George's Road Wines

The scenery was stunning, the wines were incredible, and the experience was made even better by Pepper, the adorable winery mascot dog who stole everyone’s heart.

And the wines? Absolutely lived up to the hype!

Being driven from winery to winery allowed us to simply relax, soak in the views, and savor every tasting without a worry. It made the whole day feel effortless! Pure enjoyment from start to finish!

After tasting several varietals, we can confidently say that New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc now ranks #1 on our list of favorite white wines! Crisp, vibrant, and unforgettable!

Where We Stayed: DoubleTree by Hilton

We stayed at Chateau on the Park – Christchurch, a DoubleTree by Hilton, and it was a truly delightful experience! The location was perfect, just a short walk from Hagley Park and close to many of the city’s main attractions.

It was the perfect base for our Christchurch adventures.

Chateau on the Park – Christchurch, a DoubleTree by Hilton

The design of the property was unique and full of character, starting with the fun fish pond that greeted us at the entrance. It instantly set a lighthearted, welcoming tone.

The hotel’s distinctive towers and garden-like layout gave it a charming, almost storybook feel.

It wasn’t just a place to stay, it felt like part of the adventure. Every detail added to the experience and made coming back each evening something to look forward to!

If you’d like to stay at the same Hilton property we enjoyed, you can book your stay here.
