Why We Chose Panama

We wanted to explore another country, but we didn’t have much time.

Instead of postponing the idea, we focused on what was possible. We searched for a destination with affordable flights, comfortable accommodations, and meaningful experiences packed into just a few days. That’s when Panama rose to the top of our list.

Just a short journey away, Panama checked every box for the perfect long-weekend international adventure.

At the top of our must-see list was the legendary Panama Canal. We weren’t just drawn to its impressive engineering; we were fascinated by the history, vision, and global impact behind it. Seeing massive ships pass through the locks in person was one of those iconic travel moments that photos can’t capture.

Choosing Panama reminded us that travel isn’t only about distance. It’s about curiosity. It’s about intention. Sometimes the best trips happen when you lean into what fits your current season of life instead of waiting for the “perfect” time.

Why We Recommend Panama

We had an incredible experience in Panama! From the culture to the cuisine to the natural beauty.

First, the people were genuinely warm and welcoming. Their hospitality made us feel comfortable from the moment we arrived. Additionally, we discovered traditional Panamanian dishes we loved so much that we’ve since recreated them at home.

Of course, visiting the Panama Canal was every bit as impressive as we imagined. However, what surprised us most was how deeply engaging the historical exhibits were. Understanding the human effort and international collaboration behind the canal made the experience even more meaningful.

Beyond the canal, we explored the charming historic district of Casco Viejo. Wandering its cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and lively plazas felt like stepping back in time. We also enjoyed browsing local markets, soaking in everyday life, and connecting with the culture in simple, authentic ways.

What truly stood out, though, was Panama’s stunning natural beauty. Hiking through a lush rainforest and spotting wildlife we’d never seen in the wild before made the trip unforgettable. The biodiversity and accessibility of nature so close to the city is something special.

Ultimately, traveling to Panama reinforced an important mindset lesson: some of the most memorable moments happen when you stay curious, embrace what feels possible, and fully engage with where you are. HOW We Prepared For Our Trip To Panama

Preparing for an international trip, even a short one, always starts with clarity and intention. Since we only had a long weekend, we wanted everything to run smoothly from the start.

Travel Documentation Required For Panama

Here’s what we confirmed before our trip:

A valid U.S. passport is required to enter Panama.

We carefully checked that:

• Our passports would not expire within three months of our arrival date.
• We had enough blank pages available for entry and exit stamps.
• Our passports were signed (a small but important detail that’s easy to overlook).

Taking a few minutes to double-check these items gave us peace of mind before departure.

We Keep a Photocopy of Our Passports

In addition to carrying our physical passports, we keep:

• A printed photocopy stored separately from the original.
• A secure digital copy saved in cloud storage.

While we hope to never need them, having backup copies is a simple precaution that can make a big difference in case of loss or theft.

Visa Requirements for U.S. Citizens

We also confirmed that a visa is not required for U.S. citizens visiting Panama for fewer than 180 days for tourism purposes.

Even though the process was straightforward, we always verify entry requirements before every international trip. Regulations can change, and staying informed helps ensure a smooth arrival.

International Health Insurance

Before traveling to Panama, we confirmed our health coverage. Our primary U.S. insurance does not cover us internationally, so we carry a separate insurance policy for accidents, illnesses, and emergencies abroad.

We reviewed our policy to ensure coverage was active for our travel dates.

What We Packed For Panama

We followed our standard packing checklist before heading to Panama.

Weather Considerations

First, we checked the forecast.

We visited Panama in March, and while we expected warm temperatures, we underestimated the humidity. And that’s saying something since we live in Florida! The humidity in Panama was on another level.

Because of that, we recommend packing:

• Lightweight, breathable clothing
• Quick-dry fabrics
• Comfortable walking shoes

There are a few essentials we never travel without:

• Our phones
• Our computers
• Noise-canceling headphones
• Christine’s Kindle

Power Supply in Panama

One convenient detail: Panama uses the same plug types as the United States, so you won’t need a power adapter.

However, we highly recommend bringing a portable power bank. When you’re out exploring all day, your phone isn’t just for photos; it’s your navigation system. Running out of battery while relying on maps is something you want to avoid.

Staying Connected While Traveling

Reliable communication is another key part of our preparation.

Christine prefers using eSIM.com to stay connected internationally. The website provides step-by-step setup instructions with pictures. We recommend installing the eSIM before you leave, although you can also complete setup once connected to Wi-Fi at the airport or hotel. Plans vary based on length of stay and data usage.

Chandler takes a different approach and uses AT&T’s International Day Pass. The cost is $12 per day, and it’s automatically added to your regular monthly bill for the days used. It’s simple and requires no additional setup.

Both options worked well for us. It just depends on your preference for flexibility versus convenience.

How We Got To and From Panama

We coordinated flights from different U.S. cities and met in Panama City (PTY). There are numerous nonstop and connecting flight options available from major hubs across the United States, making Panama an easy international destination for a long weekend.

Important Flight Note

Panama requires proof of a return ticket to your home country or an onward destination. Be sure your return flight is booked before departure, as airlines may ask to see confirmation prior to boarding.

Where We Stayed In Panama

During our visit to Panama City, we stayed at the Hampton Inn by Hilton Panama. It was clean, comfortable, and a solid option for a short stay.

However, from a location and amenities standpoint, we recommend considering the Hilton Panama instead. We stopped in to explore the property while we were nearby and were impressed with its setting and features.

The Hilton offers:

• Easy access to shopping and dining
• Beautiful waterfront views
• Multiple on-site amenities
• A casino located on the property if you’d like to test your luck

How We Got Around Panama

While visiting Panama City, we primarily explored on foot, with a few additional transportation options mixed in. Since we were only there for three days, we didn’t use public transportation this time—but we found it easy to get around.

Here’s what worked well for us:

City Sightseeing Hop-on hop-off Bus

We purchased the City Sightseeing hop-on hop-off tour of Panama City. The open-top bus stops at major attractions throughout the city, allowing you to get off, explore, and then hop back on when you’re ready.

It’s a convenient way to see key sites while also listening to recorded commentary about Panama’s history and culture. For a short trip, it helped us maximize our time and get oriented quickly.

Uber

We used Uber for airport transportation and a few longer distances around the city. The app works just like it does in the United States, making it a simple and reliable option.

Walking

Most of all, we walked.

Panama City is very walkable in many areas, especially near the waterfront and historic districts. Walking allowed us to slow down, explore at our own pace, and fully take in the atmosphere of the city.

For us, that combination of walking, occasional Uber rides, and the hop-on hop-off bus was the perfect balance for a three-day visit.

Beyond its sheer scale, the Panama Canal plays a crucial role in global trade, dramatically reducing shipping time for goods traveling around the world.

The tour also allowed us the opportunity to see the large shipping vessels as they continued along their way to their final destination. They definitely made a wake for our little boat.
