Every State Capitol tells a story, and part of the excitement of our U.S. Capitol Challenge is discovering those stories for the very first time. Even though I grew up in Iowa, I had never set foot inside the Iowa State Capitol until this visit. That’s exactly why we love this challenge! It pushes you to explore places you might have overlooked, even in your own backyard!
Of all the Capitols we’ve visited so far, Iowa’s has climbed straight to the top of our list. This isn’t just home state pride speaking. This Capitol is absolutely breathtaking!
First Impressions: A Stunning Arrival
Driving toward the Iowa State Capitol, our anticipation grew with every glimpse. The golden dome glimmered above the city, flanked by four smaller domes at each corner. Even before setting foot on the grounds, the Capitol commands attention, an elegant testament to Iowa’s history and pride.
The Capitol grounds are filled with monuments and memorials that tell Iowa’s story. The Buffalo Fountain, topped with the Pioneer Statuary Group, reflects the spirit of the Midwest.

The Lincoln and Tad Statue brings a warm, personal touch to the Capitol’s grounds, reminding visitors of the human stories behind history.
The Revolutionary War Memorial connects Iowa to the nation’s founding, while the Bicentennial Fountain offers a place to pause and reflect on 200 years of progress.
Take your time exploring the grounds to discover all the fascinating monuments and memorials. You can also listen to an audio guide to learn more about each site. The Cell Phone Audio Information (smartphone audio and video) is available here.
The Iowa State Capitol is just as stunning after dark. Stroll the grounds and enjoy the warm glow of the illuminated dome. Every angle reveals a new perspective of this beautiful landmark.

We love searching for the Replica Liberty Bell at each Capitol we visit.
Iowa’s replica is located on the grounds, and you can even ring it yourself! Its sound is lovely and surprisingly resonant, giving you chills as you imagine the history and freedom it represents.
Mind Set On Travel Tip: Taking the time to notice details like this can shift how you experience travel. It’s easy to rush past, but when you pause and appreciate small touches, you create memories that feel more personal and meaningful.
Entering the Capitol
As you enter the Iowa State Capitol, your visit begins at the security checkpoint. Beyond that, you’ll find the tour guide station, where you can grab a map for a self-guided tour. While self-guided tours are an option, we highly recommend joining a guided tour.

Guided tours are the best way to uncover the stories, history, and hidden details you might otherwise miss. PLUS, access to the dome requires a guide.
We felt especially lucky to join a tour led by the State Senator from District 17. He was engaging, entertaining, and even granted us access to the balcony of the dome!
The views were incredible, and yes, the Iowa wind made its presence known, as you can see from my hair in the picture!
Mind Set On Travel Tip: Don’t hesitate to ask for opportunities that catch your eye. Expressing interest or politely requesting to join something can open doors to experiences you might otherwise miss. Be confident! Don’t let fear hold you back!
Stepping into the Heart of the Capitol
After leaving the tour guide station, you’ll make your way to the first floor. This is where the true awe begins!
The Rotunda
Every surface and detail of the Rotunda seems designed to inspire awe and reflection.

Inspiration surrounds you at every turn!
From intricate paintings depicting pivotal moments in Iowa’s history to etchings and engravings honoring the people, events, and values that shaped the state.
Each painting, engraving, and decorative flourish invites you to slow down, look closer, and appreciate the skill and thought that went into creating this magnificent centerpiece of Iowa’s government.
The Dome: A Masterpiece
As you stand in the Rotunda, your eyes are naturally drawn to the soaring dome above. The dome is adorned with golden squares, each catching the light from the dozens of brilliant fixtures designed to highlight its grandeur. Below, large windows allow natural light to pour in, illuminating the intricate details of the interior and casting a warm glow on the space. These windows are flanked by impressive marble pillars, adding a sense of strength and elegance.

The dome rises an impressive 275 feet above the Capitol grounds, a striking testament to the ambition and craftsmanship of those who built it.
Its interior is painted a brilliant sky blue with delicate clouds, creating a serene backdrop for the centerpiece.
In the center rests the original flag, eagle, and star, honoring the Grand Army of the Republic, with the dates 1861–1865 to commemorate the Civil War. A solemn and powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during that pivotal time in American history.
Looking up at this masterpiece, it’s impossible not to feel awe. Every detail works together to create a space that is both grand and intimate, majestic and deeply meaningful. The dome is not just the architectural crown of the Iowa State Capitol; it is the heart of the building, drawing visitors upward in wonder and admiration.
Unique Displays on the First Floor
As you explore the first floor of the Iowa State Capitol, be sure to take your time to enjoy the unique displays scattered throughout the space.
First Spouses’ Doll Collection
One of the most charming exhibits is the collection of dolls showcasing Iowa’s first spouses in their inaugural outfits.

Each doll is carefully dressed in period attire, offering a delightful glimpse into the style and history of Iowa’s political families.
Above the doll display, a reproduction photograph of infantry returning in 1919 honors the men and women who served.
The USS Iowa Battleship Display
A display dedicated to the USS Iowa Battleship highlights the state’s contributions to naval service, reminding visitors of the broader impact Iowans have had on national defense.

These exhibits add depth and personality to the Capitol experience.
They offer moments to pause, reflect, and appreciate the rich tapestry of Iowa’s history, not just in government, but in culture, service, and community.
The Grand Stairway
The next step in your journey is ascending the grand stairway.

As you climb, take a moment to admire the marble railings, intricate engravings, and decorative flourishes. Every detail invites you to pause and reflect on the care and artistry poured into the Capitol’s design. It showcases a level of elegance and craftsmanship that is truly remarkable.
From above, the grand stairway takes on a whole new look.

Looking down from above, the grand stairway reveals its full beauty.
Every angle offers a new perspective, making it a spot worth lingering over and appreciating.
Mind Set On Travel Tip: Try viewing things from different perspectives. This helps you see beauty you might otherwise overlook.
Inside the Halls of Power ⚖️
Step into the House of Representatives and Senate Chambers, where Iowa’s lawmakers debate and shape the state’s future.
The House of Representatives
Stepping into the House of Representatives chamber is like entering the engine room of Iowa’s government. The room is alive with history, authority, and civic purpose. Rows of polished desks and chairs are arranged to facilitate debate and collaboration.

Even when the chamber is empty, it radiates energy, as if the echoes of past debates, votes, and speeches still linger in the air. Walking through the House gives a palpable sense of tradition, responsibility, and civic pride, making it clear why this space is so central to Iowa’s government and to the Capitol experience itself.
The Senate Chamber
Stepping into the Senate chamber, you immediately notice a contrast to the House. While both chambers are grand, the Senate exudes a sense of formality and tradition. The room is arranged for deliberation and debate, with rows of desks, elegant woodwork, and decorative detailing that convey the chamber’s authority.

Visiting the Senate chamber gives a sense of the weight of responsibility carried by Iowa’s lawmakers. Even without a session in progress, the chamber feels alive with purpose, reminding visitors that the decisions made here shape the lives of every Iowan.
The State Law Library: A Gem 🕮
Among the many impressive spaces in the Iowa State Capitol, the Law Library stands out as one of our personal favorites.

The room immediately captures your attention with its high ceilings, rich woodwork, and rows of meticulously organized books, creating a sense of history and knowledge that is palpable.
Every detail in the Library is thoughtfully designed.
The shelves are lined not only with books on Iowa law and history, but also with volumes that reflect the broader story of governance, civic duty, and culture.
Visiting the Library is more than just seeing a collection of books. It’s stepping into a space where knowledge, history, and design intersect.
Artistic & Architectural Brilliance
The Iowa State Capitol is filled with artistic and architectural wonders at every turn.
The Mosaics
As you walk along the mosaics above the grand stairway, take a moment to watch the feet.

The intricate patterns seem to turn toward you as you walk by, a playful touch that highlights the skill and creativity of the designers.

The Dome
Look back up to the dome, where the stunning display draws your eye.

From below, it seems as though the artwork is painted directly on the ceiling, but in reality, it is a carefully suspended hanging display.
The intricate design, vivid colors, and masterful perspective create a brilliant optical illusion, giving the impression of depth and three-dimensionality that changes as you move beneath it. Sunlight filtering through the dome’s windows highlights different sections throughout the day, adding a dynamic quality.
Whispering Gallery
If you take the guided tour, you’ll not only get a breathtaking view down into the Capitol from the dome, but you’ll also experience the whispering gallery.

As you walk around the dome, a whisper in just the right spot can be clearly heard on the opposite side, a clever acoustic trick that never fails to amaze!
The whispering gallery is a playful reminder of the Capitol’s architectural ingenuity and attention to detail, blending beauty with function.
Be careful what you whisper!
Explore Des Moines
We highly recommend taking the time to stroll down East Locust Street toward the heart of Des Moines. We found the city to be friendly, vibrant, and full of charm! What a fantastic place to explore!

Along the way, you’ll notice the engraved outline of Iowa, with all 99 counties marked in their proper locations.
On both sides of the street, each county is also listed in alphabetical order, making it a fun and interactive way to explore the state as you walk.
Chandler chose to stand on Cherokee County for this photo. A special spot, since that’s where my family still calls home.
