Liechtenstein: Guide to Visiting 4 Countries in One Day

There’s something powerful about setting a travel goal that stretches your thinking.

For us, that goal is simple: explore 100 countries around the world.

But this journey has never been just about numbers. It’s about curiosity, saying yes to unexpected opportunities, and discovering places many travelers overlook.

That mindset is exactly what led us to Liechtenstein.

At first glance, Liechtenstein might not seem like a destination worth building an itinerary around. It’s the 6th-smallest country in the world, quietly tucked between Switzerland and Austria, with no international airport and little global attention.

But that’s precisely what made visiting Liechtenstein so memorable.

What started as a simple European road trip quickly turned into one of the most unique travel experiences we’ve ever had.

In just one unforgettable day, we:

  • Landed in Germany
  • Drove through Austria
  • Explored Liechtenstein
  • Walked into Switzerland

Four countries. One day. And somehow, it never felt rushed.

Instead, this Liechtenstein travel itinerary became a reminder that some of the best travel experiences come from destinations you almost skip.

Why Choose Liechtenstein?

Liechtenstein is one of Europe’s smallest and most overlooked countries, but it delivers far more than most travelers expect.

Vineyard in Vaduz

Surrounded by the Alps and filled with scenic views, charming towns, and peaceful walking paths, Liechtenstein feels both relaxing and adventurous.

Unlike larger European destinations packed with crowds, Liechtenstein offers a slower and more intentional travel experience.

And the best part?

It’s incredibly easy to visit.

Because of its location between Switzerland and Austria, Liechtenstein fits perfectly into a multi-country Europe itinerary.

👉 Mind Set On Travel Tip:
Sometimes the destinations that receive the least attention create the best memories. Traveling to places like Liechtenstein challenges you to stay curious, open-minded, and willing to explore beyond the typical tourist path.

Our 4-Country Travel Plan

One of the reasons this trip worked so well was because we kept the itinerary simple.

Rather than trying to do too much, we focused on enjoying the experience of moving through multiple countries at a relaxed pace.

Step 1: Fly into Munich, Germany

Our trip began with a morning arrival at Munich Airport in Germany.

Our Hertz rental car

After landing around 9:30 AM, we picked up our rental car from Hertz and immediately started driving south toward the Alps.

Flying into Munich turned out to be the perfect starting point for this Liechtenstein road trip because it provided easy highway access and a smooth transition into Austria.

The scenery became more beautiful with every mile.

Step 2: Drive Through Austria

Crossing into Austria was part of the adventure itself.

Driving in Austria

Within a short drive, the landscape transformed into rolling hills, mountain views, and classic Alpine scenery that made the road trip unforgettable.

Austria added an entirely different energy to the experience and reminded us that sometimes the drive becomes just as memorable as the destination.

👉 Important Driving Tip:
If you plan to drive through Austria and Switzerland, purchase the required vignette (road tax sticker) before crossing the border. These are typically available at gas stations near border crossings and must be displayed on your windshield.

Step 3: Explore Vaduz, Liechtenstein

Eventually, we arrived in Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein and the highlight of our journey.

Charming streets

Almost immediately, we realized this small country had far more charm than we expected.

Vaduz is clean, walkable, scenic, and surrounded by dramatic mountain views that make the entire city feel postcard-worthy.

Even though Liechtenstein is small, it never felt insignificant.

Instead, it felt intentional.

And that’s what made it special.

Walking Through Vaduz

One of the best ways to experience Vaduz is simply by walking through the town center.

The downtown of Vaduz

As we explored, we found:

  • Charming cafes
  • Fascinating museums
  • Interesting art
  • Incredible churches
  • Beautiful Alpine backdrops
  • Scenic walking paths
  • A visitor center that will stamp your passport
  • Local Wine
  • Rich History

Everything felt peaceful, relaxed, and easy to enjoy without the overwhelming crowds often found in larger European cities.

Vaduz Castle

One of the most iconic sights in Liechtenstein is Vaduz Castle, which overlooks the city from above.

Vaduz Castle

Although the castle is not open to the public because it remains the residence of the royal family, seeing it from below is still worth the visit.

The mountain backdrop alone makes this one of the most scenic spots in the country.

Vaduz City Train

If you prefer a more relaxed sightseeing experience, the Vaduz City Train also offers guided rides through the area and includes excellent viewpoints overlooking the castle and the surrounding valley.

Step 4: Walk Into Switzerland

One of the most unforgettable moments of our Liechtenstein trip happened with something incredibly simple:

We walked across a bridge and entered another country.

Walking across the bridge

From Vaduz, we made our way toward the Old Rhine Bridge, a small wooden bridge connecting Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

There were no long border lines, no airport terminals, and no complicated process.

Just a peaceful walk across the Rhine River surrounded by incredible mountain scenery.

Within minutes, we were standing in Switzerland.

Standing on the Swiss side of the bridge

Experiences like this completely change the way you think about travel in Europe. The proximity between countries makes it possible to experience multiple cultures, landscapes, and destinations in a surprisingly short amount of time.

👉 Mind Set On Travel Moment:
Travel has a way of making the world feel both bigger and smaller at the same time. Bigger because there’s always more to explore. Smaller because you realize how connected everything truly is.

The Beauty of Slow Travel in a Fast Trip

At first, visiting four countries in one day might sound rushed.

But surprisingly, this trip never felt overwhelming.

Reiver separating the 2 countries

Instead of trying to “check countries off a list,” we focused on enjoying each moment as it came.

That mindset changed the entire experience.

We weren’t racing through Europe.

We were appreciating the journey.

By the end of the day, we had:

  • Landed in Germany
  • Driven through Austria
  • Explored Vaduz, Liechtenstein
  • Walked into Switzerland

And somehow, it all flowed naturally.

That’s the beauty of strategic travel planning.

Sometimes a well-designed itinerary creates space for both adventure and presence.

Alternative Liechtenstein Itinerary: Zurich Route

If you want another great way to visit Liechtenstein, consider flying into Zurich, Switzerland instead of Munich.

This route offers another beautiful European road trip option while still making Liechtenstein easily accessible.

Fly into Zurich, Switzerland

Zurich International Airport works extremely well as a starting point for a Liechtenstein itinerary.

After picking up a rental car, you can reach Vaduz in approximately 1.5 hours depending on traffic and weather conditions.

The drive itself is incredibly scenic, especially as the mountains begin to appear along the route.

Continue to Lake Constance

One of the best additions to this itinerary is continuing north toward Lake Constance after visiting Liechtenstein.

This region is unique because Germany, Austria, and Switzerland all meet around the lake, creating endless opportunities for day trips, hiking, and border crossings.

The area feels relaxed, scenic, and incredibly easy to explore.

Where We Stayed Near Liechtenstein

For our trip, we stayed at the Hampton by Hilton Konstanz in Konstanz, Germany.

This turned out to be an excellent home base for exploring the Lake Constance region and nearby countries.

Konstanz sits directly on Lake Constance and offers easy access to:

  • Germany
  • Switzerland
  • Austria
  • Liechtenstein

The location made day trips simple while still giving us a relaxing place to return each evening.

Hiking Around Lake Constance

One of the biggest highlights of this trip was realizing how easy it was to experience multiple countries through hiking.

Using AllTrails, we planned hikes in:

Hiking in Austria
  • Germany
  • Switzerland
  • Austria

All within a single day!

Each country offered a completely different atmosphere, trail style, and scenery.

Some hikes included lake views while others featured forests, small villages, and mountain landscapes.

Our Favorite Hike: Mainau Island

Without question, one of our favorite experiences near Lake Constance was visiting Mainau Island.

Known as the “Flower Island,” Mainau felt like stepping into a postcard.

During our early May visit, the gardens were overflowing with color.

Mainau Island

Tulips, perfectly landscaped pathways, waterfront views, and blooming flowers transformed the island into one of the most beautiful places we experienced during the entire trip.

If you visit this region during spring, Mainau Island deserves a spot on your itinerary.

👉 Best Time to Visit Mainau Island:
May is absolutely magical. Flowers are in bloom, temperatures are comfortable, and the entire island feels alive with color.

Driving Tips for Visiting Liechtenstein

If you’re planning your own Liechtenstein road trip, here are a few important things to know before you go.

Vignettes Are Required

If you drive through Austria or Switzerland, you’ll need to purchase a vignette, which is a road tax sticker required for highway driving.

Tags for Austria and Switzerland

You can usually buy these:

  • At gas stations near the border
  • At service stations along major highways

Always display them properly on your windshield to avoid fines.

Border Crossings Are Easy

One of the most enjoyable parts of this trip was how seamless the border crossings felt.

Because these countries are part of the Schengen Area, there were typically no major border stops during our drive.

Still, always carry your passport and travel documents with you.

Driving on the Autobahn

Driving on the German Autobahn is an experience by itself.

While some sections have no posted speed limit, many areas do enforce limits depending on traffic, construction, and road conditions.

The key is staying alert, driving responsibly, and respecting local traffic laws.

Best Time To Visit Liechtenstein

The truth is there really isn’t a bad time to visit Liechtenstein.

Each season offers a completely different experience.

Spring

Spring is one of the most beautiful times to visit Liechtenstein and the surrounding Lake Constance region.

The Flowers

Expect:

  • Blooming flowers
  • Comfortable temperatures
  • Excellent hiking weather
  • Fewer crowds

Summer

Summer brings warmer weather and longer days, making it ideal for:

  • Hiking
  • Outdoor dining
  • Lake activities

Fall

Fall creates stunning mountain scenery with cooler temperatures and changing leaves.

It’s also a wonderful time for scenic road trips and smaller crowds.

Additionally, Germany and Austria begin celebrating Oktoberfest during this season.

Winter

Winter transforms the region into a snowy Alpine landscape.

This is an incredible time for:

  • Skiing
  • Christmas markets
  • Winter photography
  • Cozy mountain experiences

Snow-covered villages make the entire region feel magical during the holiday season.

Is Liechtenstein Worth Visiting?

Absolutely!

Before this trip, Liechtenstein was one of those countries we rarely heard people talk about. It didn’t dominate travel blogs, social media feeds, or bucket-list conversations the way larger European destinations often do.

But that’s exactly why it stood out.

Liechtenstein offered something many popular destinations struggle to provide:

Space to slow down.

Walking path up to the castle

Instead of fighting massive crowds or rushing between tourist attractions, we were able to simply enjoy the experience of being there.

Walking through Vaduz felt peaceful.

The mountain scenery felt untouched.

And the simplicity of the country made the entire visit feel intentional rather than overwhelming.

Sometimes the destinations that surprise you the most are the ones you almost skip.

👉 Mind Set On Travel Perspective:
Travel doesn’t always need to be bigger to be more meaningful. Sometimes smaller destinations create the strongest memories because they challenge your expectations.

What Made This Europe Trip So Memorable

This trip was never just about visiting four countries.

It became a reminder of how powerful travel can be when you stay open to possibility.

Adding Liechtenstein to our itinerary completely changed the experience.

Without it, this would have simply been another drive through Europe.

Instead, it became:

  • A four-country adventure
  • A scenic Alpine road trip
  • A reminder to stay curious
  • A chance to explore somewhere unexpected

That single decision transformed the journey.

And honestly, that’s one of the biggest lessons travel continues to teach us.

The experiences that impact you the most are often the ones you never originally planned.
