While exploring the Capitol grounds, don’t miss the Flame of Freedom.
This striking monument honors Alabama’s war veterans.
It’s a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served, and it adds another layer of meaning to the Capitol’s historic landscape.
Star on the Front Steps
Look for the star embedded on the front steps of the Capitol. It marks the exact spot where Jefferson Davis stood when he was inaugurated as the President of the Confederate States of America in 1861. This site is a powerful reminder of the complex and often painful chapters of American history that unfolded right here in Montgomery.
Standing there, we couldn’t help but reflect on how deeply layered our nation’s history is. Full of triumphs, struggles, and painful truths.
Visiting this site reminded us that part of understanding our present and shaping our future comes from acknowledging and learning from the full scope of our past.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. made one of his greatest speeches right here in Montgomery, where the Alabama State Capitol played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement. Standing on the steps of the Capitol, Dr. King delivered a powerful message of hope, justice, and equality, marking a defining moment in the struggle for civil rights.
Touring the Alabama State Capitol
An intriguing piece of history about the Alabama State Capitol: it served as the first Capitol for the Confederate States of America. This fact adds another layer of historical significance to the building, as it played a key role during a turbulent time in American history.

The Capitols of Alabama
Did you know? Alabama has had five different capitol locations throughout its history.
The current building in Montgomery is the fifth and final location, with previous capitols located in St. Stephens, Huntsville, Cahaba, and Tuscaloosa.
Each move reflected a pivotal shift in the state’s political and geographic development, ultimately leading to Montgomery becoming the permanent capital in 1846.
As you walk through the front doors of the Capitol, you’ll be immediately impressed by the two sweeping staircases that curve upward with elegance, framing the entrance in grandeur.
There was a wonderful gentleman at the entrance who greeted us warmly and offered helpful information about the Capitol. His enthusiasm set the tone for the visit and made us even more excited to explore the history waiting inside.
The Rotunda – A Stunning Centerpiece
As you step past the grand staircases and into the heart of the Alabama State Capitol, you’ll find yourself in the Rotunda. An awe-inspiring space that captures the architectural and artistic spirit of the building.
The space itself is designed to impress. Both a literal and symbolic center of the Capitol. It’s a place where architecture, art, and history converge, making it one of the most memorable features of the entire building.
The Rotunda is crowned by a soaring domed ceiling, illuminated by natural light filtering through a circular skylight at its peak.
The dome’s interior is adorned with ornate plasterwork, decorative moldings, and elegant detailing that draw your eyes upward, encouraging you to pause and take in its quiet grandeur.
Murals
What makes the Rotunda truly special, however, are the eight large murals encircling the room.
Painted by artist Roderick MacKenzie in the 1920s, each mural tells the story of a pivotal moment in Alabama’s past.
From its early Native American history and European exploration to the founding of the state and its role in the Civil War.
These vibrant artworks offer a visual journey through the state’s past, bringing its story to life in a way that complements the Capitol’s rich architecture.

The Senate Chamber
