From the moment we arrived, the Capitol captured our attention with its grand design and historic presence. The feature that stood out most was the golden orb at the very top of the dome. Positioned above the cupola, this shining detail crowns the building and reflects California’s rich history.
The golden orb is more than just an architectural feature. It symbolizes the legacy of the California Gold Rush and serves as a reminder of the ambition, opportunity, and transformation that shaped the state.
The overall design of the California State Capitol also brings a European-inspired elegance to Sacramento. Its structure and symmetry reminded us of the classic architecture found throughout Europe, while also drawing clear similarities to the United States Capitol.
The Incredible Capitol Park
One of the best things to do in Sacramento is to stroll through the beautiful grounds surrounding the California State Capitol. The California State Capitol Park offers a peaceful escape right in the heart of the city.
We experienced perfect weather during our visit, which made walking through the park even more enjoyable. With wide paths, open green spaces, and historic features, Capitol Park creates the perfect setting to slow down and fully enjoy your Sacramento travel experience.
The Trees in California State Capitol Park
Can you imagine exploring a park filled with 450 varieties of trees from around the world? All within 40 acres? That’s what you’ll find in this lovely area surrounding the Capitol.
As we walked along the shaded paths, each turn revealed something new. Towering palms, unique evergreens, and rare species you might never expect to see in one place.
It’s the kind of setting that naturally encourages curiosity and presence.
Instead of rushing, we found ourselves slowing down, looking up, and appreciating the diversity and history rooted in every corner of the park.
The Monuments in Capitol Park
The monuments in California State Capitol Park add meaning and historical significance to your visit. As you walk through the park, you will find tributes that honor service, sacrifice, and the people who have shaped California’s history.
One of the most powerful memorials we visited was the California Firefighters Memorial.
This monument stands as a strong tribute to the bravery and dedication of firefighters across the state.

The Missing Replica Liberty Bell
During our travels, we enjoy searching for replica Liberty Bells at each state capitol. It has become a fun tradition that adds a unique element to every visit.
At the California State Capitol Park, we set out to find the replica Liberty Bell.
We located the structure where the bell should be displayed, but….. the bell itself was missing.
Even though we did not find the bell, the experience still added a memorable and unexpected moment to our visit. Travel does not always go exactly as planned, and sometimes those surprises become the stories you remember most.

Standing beneath it, you soak it in. The sunlight softens everything, highlighting details you might otherwise miss.
It’s one of those moments where you pause… look up… and just take it all in.

Gold is more than a decorative element in the California State Capitol; it’s a storytelling feature.
You’ll notice gold accents in the moldings, lettering, and detailed finishes throughout the building.
These accents honor California’s Gold Rush heritage and remind visitors of the risk, excitement, and promise that shaped the state.
Even before the tour begins, the building tells its story. And the golden accents set the tone for an experience that’s as inspiring as it is historic.
The Restored Mosaic Tile Floors
One of the most impressive restoration efforts inside the California State Capitol is the intricate mosaic tile flooring.
Workers carefully removed thousands of tiles during restoration, preserved them, and then reassembled them piece by piece, like a massive puzzle. The result is a beautifully restored floor that reflects both craftsmanship and dedication to preserving history.
As you walk through the Capitol, take a moment to look down. These tiles are not just decorative; they are part of the building’s story.
The Assembly Chamber: Where Laws Begin
Inside the Assembly chamber, one piece stopped us in our tracks.
A portrait of Abraham Lincoln hangs prominently, watching over the room where modern laws are debated and shaped.
Beneath it, written in gold Latin, is the phrase: Legislatorum Est Justas Leges Condere
Roughly translated:
“It is the duty of legislators to make just laws.”
It’s simple. Powerful. And incredibly fitting.
In a room filled with history, that message still feels very present.
The Senate: A Capitol Changed by Time (and “Situations”)
Not every feature of the California State Capitol reflects its original design, and that tells an important story too.
As we entered the Assembly and Senate galleries, one detail stood out immediately: plexiglass barriers now line the viewing areas.
These weren’t part of the original design.
They were added later, Margo explained, due to past “situations.”
She didn’t dwell on specifics, but she didn’t need to. The quiet presence of those barriers tells its own story.
The Case of the “Missing” Stars at the Capitol
One of the funniest moments on our California State Capitol tour involved the governor’s portrait of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
At first glance, the portrait looks like a photograph, but it’s actually a painting. And if you take a closer look, you’ll notice something unusual: there are only 29 stars in the background.
Here’s where it gets interesting.
California is the 31st state, so the painting should include 31 stars. Naturally, that raises the question:
Where are the missing stars?
According to our guide, Margo, the artist, who was from Austria, had a creative explanation. When asked about the missing stars, he responded:
“The stars aren’t missing… they’re in his eyes.”
It’s one of those details you would never notice on your own, but once you hear it, you’ll never look at the painting the same way again.
A Presidential Connection at the California State Capitol
Before wrapping up our visit, we made one last stop on the lower level near the gift shop. What we found was a powerful connection to American history.
Standing proudly was a statue of Ronald Reagan.
Before becoming the 40th President of the United States, Reagan served as the governor of California. His presence inside the California State Capitol building in Sacramento connects state leadership to national history in a meaningful and tangible way.
This stop may feel quieter than the grand Rotunda or legislative chambers, but it leaves a lasting impression. It’s a reflective way to conclude your tour.
