Foundations of the Colorado Capitol
There’s something undeniably thrilling about standing exactly one mile above sea level.
The Mile-High Marker
On the western steps of the Colorado State Capitol in Denver, that thrill becomes tangible. A small brass plaque marks the exact point where you are standing at 5,280 feet in elevation.
This marker isn’t just a tourist novelty.
It’s a symbol of Denver’s unique identity and a gateway into one of the most beautiful and historically rich Capitol buildings in the United States.
The Colorado State Capitol stands proudly in the heart of Denver, its shimmering gold dome rising above Civic Center Park, surrounded by panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains to the west and the city’s vibrant skyline to the east.
Honoring the Ute People – The First Peoples of Colorado
Before Denver rose to become the capital of Colorado, before gold rushes and railroads carved their mark into the landscape, this land belonged to the Ute people.
As the original stewards of what is now Colorado, the Ute tribes have lived on and cared for this land for centuries.
Their legacy is deeply woven into the state’s history, and today, that legacy is honored on the grounds of the Colorado State Capitol.

One of the unexpected highlights inside the Colorado State Capitol is the Gallery of Presidents. A dignified and thoughtfully curated hallway showcasing portraits of every President of the United States.
Each portrait captures not just the likeness of a president but a glimpse into the era they helped shape, from the powdered wigs and formal attire of the early leaders to the modern-day figures who continue to influence the nation.
This display isn’t just for political buffs; it’s for anyone who appreciates how far we’ve come and the complexity of leadership in a democracy.

The Center of the Capitol
The magnificent rotunda is the soaring heart of the building where history, art, and architecture converge.
The Rotunda
Walking into the rotunda truly takes your breath away.
As you walk up the grand staircase, take a moment to pause and look back.
The view from this perspective offers a completely different view of the rotunda. The murals that wrap the room come into fuller focus, revealing new details in the brushwork and storytelling.

We had so many great pictures of the rotunda that it was hard to pick just one to share! It reminded us that sometimes there isn’t just one right perspective, beauty can be found in many views, and each moment offers something unique.
The Dome
Looking up at the dome from the rotunda floor is one of the most awe-inspiring moments inside the Colorado State Capitol.
The intricate details, soft natural light, and soaring height create a sense of wonder, but there’s something more. This dome almost feels like looking into an eye: vast, watching, centered. It draws your gaze upward and inward at the same time, inviting reflection.
The patterns and symmetry are mesmerizing, and the circular shape seems to hold both history and hope within its embrace.
Colorado’s Ring of Fame
Nestled in the dome structure of the Colorado State Capitol, you’ll find the building’s very first major artwork: Colorado’s Ring of Fame.
This inspiring collection of stained glass windows forms a brilliant circle around the dome, located above the attic and just below the public observation area.
These windows are more than decoration, they’re storytelling tools.
Each panel captures the essence of a person and a time, preserving their contributions in a medium both delicate and enduring. As the first artwork ever added to the Capitol, the Ring of Fame set the tone for Colorado’s commitment to honoring its heritage not just with words, but with beauty.
Observation Deck
Near the top of the dome lies the observation deck, a stunning vantage point that offers a whole new perspective on Colorado’s beauty and scale. There are quite a few stairs to climb, but the effort is absolutely worth it!
From nearly seven stories above ground, you can see Denver’s downtown bustle, the sprawling eastern plains, and the majestic Rocky Mountains framing the horizon.
On a clear day, the view is nothing short of breathtaking!
Tip: Visitors are welcome to explore most of the Capitol on a self-guided tour, wandering through the halls, chambers, and public areas at their own pace. However, if you want to climb the stairs to the observation deck, you must join a guided tour. This is both for safety reasons and to preserve the historic structure.
The Branches of the Colorado Government
While the Colorado State Capitol is best known for its stunning architecture and historic significance, it’s also a working building. Home to the state’s Legislative and Executive branches, and closely tied to the Judicial branch as well.
🏛️The Executive Branch
The Governor of Colorado and other key executive leaders, such as the Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of State, make up the Executive Branch.
While their offices are not always accessible to the public, their presence is felt throughout the Capitol.
Portraits of past governors line the hallways, telling stories of leadership across generations.
The Executive Branch plays a vital role in shaping Colorado’s present and future by enforcing state laws, managing the budget, and overseeing a wide range of essential state functions.
⚖️ The Judicial Branch
Located on the second floor, the Old Supreme Court Chambers served as the state’s highest court for decades until the move to the new judicial complex.
The chamber has been repurposed as a Legislative committee hearing room, where important bills are discussed, debated, and shaped before reaching the floor of the House or Senate.
What truly makes this room special, though, are the Heritage Windows. These stunning stained glass installations represent some of the many ethnic and cultural groups that contributed to the development of Colorado
Colorado’s Judicial Branch is now housed primarily in the modern Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center just across the street, its connection to the Capitol remains central to the state’s balance of power.
🏛️ The Legislative Branch
At the heart of the Capitol building is Colorado’s Legislative Branch, where the State House of Representatives and Senate meet to debate, draft, and pass the laws that shape life across Colorado.
Senate Chambers
The Senate Chambers of the Colorado State Capitol are located on the second floor, just off the grand rotunda, and are a striking example of timeless design meeting modern governance.
This is where 35 elected state senators gather during the legislative session to debate bills, propose laws, and represent the interests of Colorado’s diverse regions.
Large portraits and historical artwork adorn the walls, including tributes to important moments and figures in Colorado’s legislative past.
The public gallery above the chamber allows visitors to observe the legislative process in action.
House of Representatives Chambers
Directly across from the Senate on the second floor of the Capitol, you’ll find the House of Representatives Chambers, the largest legislative room in the building and home to Colorado’s 65 state representatives.
This is where the people’s voice truly takes shape, as representatives from every corner of the state gather to draft, amend, and vote on laws that impact the lives of millions.
The chamber has a slightly more open and energetic feel compared to the Senate.
You can sit in the public gallery above and watch it all unfold.

🌿 Don’t Miss the Capitol Grounds
Before you leave, make sure to take time to explore the grounds around the Capitol. There’s history and meaning tucked into nearly every corner.
On the east side of the building, you’ll find one of the most powerful statues on the property, a striking sculpture of a Native American standing over a buffalo, honoring the deep connection between Indigenous peoples and the land we now call Colorado.
It’s a quiet, reverent space that invites reflection on both the richness and complexity of the state’s past.
The Capitol is not just a place for policy, but for remembrance, respect, and perspective.
The Replica Liberty Bell
Take a few extra moments to walk across the street from the Capitol’s west entrance to see one more special landmark: a full-size replica of the Liberty Bell.
It’s tucked just beyond the Capitol grounds and easy to miss if you’re not looking for it.
Gifted to each state in 1950 as part of a national savings bond campaign, Colorado’s replica stands as a powerful symbol of freedom and unity. Its presence, just steps away from where state laws are debated and passed, is a thoughtful reminder of the ideals that bind us together as a nation.

The Colorado State Capitol is a living, breathing symbol of the state’s past, present, and future. From the moment you step up to the Mile-High marker to the final glimpse from the observation deck high above the city, this building invites you to look deeper.
