How to Tour the Florida State Capitol
Enjoying the beautiful grounds is just the beginning, but if time allows, be sure to take a tour of the Florida State Capitol. It’s free!

We started our Florida State Capitol experience by taking a leisurely stroll through the beautifully landscaped Capitol grounds and courtyard. This area is more than just a scenic entryway, it’s an open-air museum rich with history, reflection, and pride.
The grounds are home to a variety of thoughtfully placed memorials and monuments that honor Florida’s diverse heritage. From military service to civil rights and state history, each one tells a story.
Travel Tip: Be sure to walk the full perimeter of the Capitol complex. Some of the most meaningful and photogenic spots are tucked away and easy to miss if you don’t do a full loop.
One especially moving tribute is the Florida Fallen Firefighter Memorial, located just outside the Capitol. This solemn site honors the brave men and women who lost their lives in the line of duty while protecting others.
The bronze figures and etched names remind visitors of the courage and sacrifice that define public service.

Today, however, Florida’s legislative process unfolds in the modern Capitol building directly behind the Old Capitol. This high-rise structure, completed in the late 1970s, houses the current Senate and House chambers, where state lawmakers meet in a sleek, updated setting that contrasts sharply with the historic charm of the original.
Supreme Court Chamber
Another fascinating highlight inside the Florida Historic Capitol Museum is the restored Florida Supreme Court Chamber.
This stately room once served as the highest court in the state.
It retains the dignified atmosphere befitting its important role in Florida’s judicial history.
Although the Supreme Court now operates from a separate building just across Duval Street, this chamber offers a powerful sense of the weighty decisions and landmark cases that once echoed within these walls.

Rising behind the charming Old Capitol, the new Florida State Capitol building stands tall and commanding.

At the top, the 22nd-floor observation deck offers panoramic views of downtown Tallahassee and the surrounding canopy landscape.
