How to Tour the Florida State Capitol

Enjoying the beautiful grounds is just the beginning, but if time allows, be sure to take a tour of the Florida State Capitol. It’s free!

Capitol Grounds and Courtyard

We started our Florida State Capitol experience by taking a leisurely stroll through the beautifully landscaped Capitol grounds and courtyard. This area is more than just a scenic entryway, it’s an open-air museum rich with history, reflection, and pride.

The grounds are home to a variety of thoughtfully placed memorials and monuments that honor Florida’s diverse heritage. From military service to civil rights and state history, each one tells a story.

Travel Tip: Be sure to walk the full perimeter of the Capitol complex. Some of the most meaningful and photogenic spots are tucked away and easy to miss if you don’t do a full loop.

Florida Fallen Firefighter Memorial

One especially moving tribute is the Florida Fallen Firefighter Memorial, located just outside the Capitol. This solemn site honors the brave men and women who lost their lives in the line of duty while protecting others.

The bronze figures and etched names remind visitors of the courage and sacrifice that define public service.

Take a moment to pause and remember the courage behind the uniforms.

This powerful bronze statue captures a solemn moment, a fellow officer cradling a fallen comrade. It reminds us of the risks these individuals take each day to protect and serve.

The plaque reads: “This memorial is dedicated to all the brave men and women who have given their lives so that others may live in freedom and safety. It is a tribute to all our everyday heroes who valiantly protect us and are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice. May this be the last officer down this society ever sees.”

Florida’s Historic Old Capitol

At the heart of the Capitol complex stands the Old Capitol. This beautifully restored structure now houses the Florida Historic Capitol Museum. With its iconic red-and-white striped awnings and classical dome, the building has been returned to its original 1902 design.

Inside, you’ll find a fascinating collection of exhibits that trace Florida’s political and legislative history. From historic photographs and artifacts to restored legislative chambers, the museum offers details for how the state’s government has evolved.

The Senate and House of Representative Chambers

One of the most memorable highlights is the chance to step into the restored Senate and House chambers.

Restored Senate Chambers

Carefully preserved with period furnishings and architectural detail, this room gives a true sense of what it was like when Florida’s lawmakers once gathered here to shape the state’s future.

It’s easy to imagine the debates, decisions, and moments that helped define Florida as we know it today.

Today, however, Florida’s legislative process unfolds in the modern Capitol building directly behind the Old Capitol. This high-rise structure, completed in the late 1970s, houses the current Senate and House chambers, where state lawmakers meet in a sleek, updated setting that contrasts sharply with the historic charm of the original.

Supreme Court Chamber

Another fascinating highlight inside the Florida Historic Capitol Museum is the restored Florida Supreme Court Chamber.

This stately room once served as the highest court in the state.

It retains the dignified atmosphere befitting its important role in Florida’s judicial history.

Although the Supreme Court now operates from a separate building just across Duval Street, this chamber offers a powerful sense of the weighty decisions and landmark cases that once echoed within these walls.

It’s a must-see for anyone interested in Florida’s legal and constitutional heritage.

The Modern State Capitol

Rising behind the charming Old Capitol, the new Florida State Capitol building stands tall and commanding.

The contrast between the historic Old Capitol and the modern tower is striking, showcasing Florida’s journey from tradition to progress.
