Up next on our Capitol challenge: Idaho State Capitol in Boise, Idaho!

Known as The Gem State, Idaho sparkles with endless natural beauty. Its capital city, Boise, affectionately called The City of Trees, provides a stunning setting for the Idaho State Capitol. Nestled against the majestic foothills, this Capitol invites exploration and admiration alike. Come along as we uncover what makes it so impressive.

Exploring the Grounds of the Idaho State Capitol

As you approach the Capitol along South Capitol Boulevard, your first glimpse reveals why this building is so impressive. The majestic dome rises high above the city, crowned by a golden eagle, a proud symbol of Idaho’s strength and independence.

The statue of Abraham Lincoln commands respect as soon as you see it.

Towering and dignified, it feels almost like Lincoln is watching over the Capitol grounds himself.

We paused to read his Gettysburg Address engraved on the plaque below.

We couldn’t help but smile at the penny embedded in the plaque, a charming nod to Lincoln’s legacy.

The Replica Liberty Bell

One of our favorite things to seek out at each Capitol is the replica Liberty Bell.

Wandering the Capitol grounds offers a peaceful and reflective experience.

The landscaping is not only beautiful but also thoughtfully designed.

The Water-Efficient Garden showcases native plants that thrive in the state’s dry climate, demonstrating that sustainability and beauty can coexist harmoniously.

It’s a quiet place to pause, breathe, and admire how the Capitol seamlessly connects with its natural surroundings.

The Capitol grounds are a true delight to explore! You won’t want to miss the variety of statues scattered throughout, each telling its own piece of Idaho’s story.

Stepping Inside the Idaho State Capitol

Once you’ve taken in the beauty and history of the grounds, stepping inside the Capitol offers a whole new experience.

We were impressed to learn that the building is open to visitors every day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., allowing plenty of time to explore at your own pace.

Certain areas of the Capitol are open for self-guided visits, though guided tours are offered only at select times during the week.

Even without a tour, there’s still plenty to explore. A recorded documentary provides an excellent overview of the Capitol, and numerous displays and exhibits offer fascinating details about its architecture, history, and the people who shaped Idaho.

Why We Found the Idaho State Capitol Impressive

The Idaho State Capitol is often called the “Capitol of Light”. A name that perfectly captures the vision of its architect, John Tourtellotte. By strategically designing light shafts, skylights, and reflective marble surfaces, natural sunlight is directed throughout the interior, illuminating the rotunda and halls. For the architect, light was more than practical; it was a metaphor for an enlightened and moral state government, a guiding principle that continues to inspire visitors today.

The Rotunda

Stepping into the rotunda, you immediately notice how the interplay of light transforms the space. Natural sunlight streams through the skylights and windows, bouncing off polished marble and casting a warm, inviting glow. Complementing this, carefully placed artificial lighting highlights architectural details and ensures the grandeur of the space is visible even on cloudy days or in the evening.

The Rotunda

The combination of natural and artificial light creates a sense of openness, elegance, and reverence, making the rotunda a truly inspiring centerpiece of the Capitol.

The Dome

The dome is the crowning feature of the Idaho State Capitol.

Its design masterfully uses both natural and artificial light. Sunlight filters through carefully placed windows and skylights, illuminating the intricate details inside, while artificial lighting ensures the dome remains stunning at any time of day.

Look up and look closely.

The Stars in the Dome

They say there are 13 large stars and 43 smaller stars at the very center of the dome.

The 13 large stars represent the original thirteen colonies, while the 43 smaller stars signify Idaho as the 43rd state to enter the Union on July 3, 1890.

We didn’t quite count all of them ourselves; the dome is quite high up, so maybe our eyes deceived us!

The Marble Columns

The marble columns lining the rotunda and hallways are more than structural elements; they’re elegant works of art.

The Columns

Each column adds a sense of strength, permanence, and dignity to the Capitol, perfectly complementing the grandeur of the rotunda and dome.

Walking among them, you can’t help but feel a connection to the history and values they represent, making the space both visually stunning and deeply inspiring.

Together, the rotunda, dome, and marble columns create a truly impressive space. The soaring heights, intricate craftsmanship, and thoughtful use of light combine to showcase Idaho’s history, values, and the vision of an enlightened state government.

The Flag in the Rotunda

Another impressive feature in the rotunda is the large American flag proudly displayed at the center.

The Flag

Its bold colors stand out against the gleaming marble and the soft light that fills the space.

The flag serves as a powerful reminder of the nation Idaho is part of, symbolizing unity, freedom, and the ideals that guide the state government.

Whether bathed in natural sunlight during the day or softly illuminated by artificial light in the evening, the flag adds a dynamic focal point to the rotunda and reinforces the sense of pride and reverence that fills the Capitol.

The Senate and House of Representative Chambers

We were a bit disappointed to miss a tour, as the Senate and House chambers are restricted to guided visits, meaning we couldn’t see these impressive spaces up close.

Even so, exploring the accessible areas gave us a great sense of the building’s history, architecture, and the important work that takes place here.

Office of the Governor

The Office of the Governor is housed within the Idaho State Capitol, serving as the center of the state’s executive leadership.

Just outside the office, a wall of pictures displays past governors, creating a visual timeline of Idaho’s leadership.

Standing before the wall, it’s easy to feel a sense of continuity, history, and pride in the people who have guided Idaho’s journey.

Special Events at the Capitol

The Idaho State Capitol isn’t just a place for government, it’s also a venue for special events!

Visitors can even schedule weddings here, making it a truly memorable location to celebrate a union.

With its grand rotunda, elegant marble columns, and stunning architecture, the Capitol provides a beautiful backdrop for creating lasting memories and marking meaningful moments in life.

Take Your Time to Explore the Capitol

One of the joys of visiting the Idaho State Capitol is simply taking your time to explore.

The Treasurer Vault

There are a few vaults throughout the Capitol, each with its own story.

While you can’t step inside, it’s fun to locate them and read about their history and purpose. These small discoveries add an interactive element to your visit, connecting you to Idaho’s past and the role these vaults played in safeguarding the state’s important documents.

By wandering slowly and paying attention to these details, you gain a fuller appreciation for the Capitol’s architecture, history, and the values it represents.

George Washington Equestrian Statue

Among the impressive artworks inside the Capitol is the George Washington Equestrian Statue.
