Touring the Louisiana State Capitol
When driving into Baton Rouge, the Louisiana State Capitol announces itself long before you arrive. Rising 450 feet above the city skyline, it’s the tallest capitol building in the United States, and it can be seen from miles away in every direction.
The closer you get, the more impressive its towering presence becomes.
Once on the grounds, you’re surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, historical monuments, and a sense of grandeur that continues inside.
Entering the Capitol
Upon arriving at the Louisiana State Capitol, we stepped back to admire the grandeur of its monumental front entryway. With its Art Deco design and limestone facade, the imposing structure immediately commanded our attention. Flanking the entrance stood towering statues that added to the sense of reverence that surrounded the building.
We made our way up the wide stone staircase, where the names of each U.S. state and the year they entered the Union are carefully etched into the steps. This thoughtful detail offered a quiet yet powerful reminder of the nation’s journey toward unity. Climbing higher, it felt as though we were ascending through history itself, with each step carrying the weight of time and progress.
At the top of the steps, we turned to take in the sweeping view: the Mississippi River winding lazily through the landscape, bordered by greenery and the distant buzz of Baton Rouge. It was a moment to pause, reflect, and take in both the beauty of the present and the legacy of the past.
Exploring the Entryway
As you step inside the Louisiana State Capitol, your eyes are immediately drawn to the impressive state seal embedded in the marble floor. A striking symbol of Louisiana’s identity and history.
Just beyond the seal, the building opens up in both directions: to the right lies the House of Representatives chamber, and to the left, the Senate chamber.
The symmetry of the layout reflects the balance of power, while the grandeur of the interior with its high ceilings, ornate bronze fixtures, and decorative carvings conveys the significance of the work conducted within these walls.
The Senate Chamber
The Senate chamber welcomes you with a rich, inviting carpet that leads you gracefully into the room. Just beyond the threshold, an intricately detailed border frames the chamber floor, adding a refined elegance to the space. The senators’ desks are arranged in a stately semicircle, each one crafted from dark, polished wood that catches the light.

The House of Representatives
Take a moment to truly take in the details as you approach the entrance to the House of Representatives. The grandeur begins well before you step inside. Above, the ceiling is a masterpiece in its own right, adorned with intricate designs and gilded accents that catch the light as you walk.

And then there are the doors; tall, stately, and carved with care.
Both the doorway and the massive bronze doors make a statement before you even cross the threshold.

The Observation Deck
The Observation Deck is located on the 27th floor and overlooks the city of Baton Rouge at a height of 350 feet, and the views of the gardens are spectacular.
The Elevator Doors
As you make your way to the observation deck, be sure to pause and take in the beauty of the elevator doors.
These aren’t ordinary doors, they’re beautifully designed, with ornate detailing.
Each one is unique, adorned with different faces intricately etched into the metal.
These expressive designs reflect Louisiana’s diverse history and culture, turning a simple wait into a moment of appreciation for the artistry woven throughout the building.
Once inside, the elevator takes you to the 25th floor, where you’ll transfer to a smaller elevator for the final leg of the journey. This second elevator brings you to the 27th floor and the observation deck, where the city of Baton Rouge stretches out beneath you and the mighty Mississippi River winds across the horizon.
The journey upward is more than just a physical ascent, it’s an invitation to see the city from a new perspective.
The View

Governor’s Mansion
You can also take a leisurely walk to the Governor’s Mansion, where you’re greeted by the grandeur of a stately residence steeped in Southern charm.
