Minnesota State Capitol: U.S. Capitols Challenge
One of the greatest surprises of our journey to visit all 50 state capitols has been discovering how many people have never stepped inside their own Capitol building.
During our visit to the Minnesota State Capitol, we joined a guided tour and heard several visitors express the same thought we have heard across the country:
“I can’t believe this beautiful building is open to the public, and I’ve never visited before.”
We couldn’t agree more.
One of the things that continues to impress us throughout our U.S. Capitols Challenge is that these magnificent buildings belong to the people. Most state Capitols are open to the public and welcome visitors to explore their history, architecture, artwork, and government spaces. Yet many residents never realize these treasures are sitting in their own backyard.
The Minnesota State Capitol in Saint Paul is a perfect example.
From the moment we arrived, we knew this would be another memorable stop on our challenge.
First Impressions of the Minnesota State Capitol
As we approached the Minnesota State Capitol, our eyes were immediately drawn upward.
While the massive white marble building is impressive on its own, what captured our attention first were the golden horses positioned at the base of the dome.
This striking sculpture, known as the Quadriga, is one of the most recognizable features of the capitol.
The golden statue is covered in 23-karat gold leaf and serves as a symbol of Minnesota’s prosperity and progress.
As impressive as it appears from the ground, the guided tour provided something even better: the opportunity to step out onto the platform and view the sculpture up close.
Exploring the Capitol’s Exterior
While the Quadriga naturally attracts attention, don’t let the gold distract you from the rest of the building.
Take time to let your eyes wander across the exterior of the Minnesota State Capitol.
The grand columns, intricate carvings, statues, and ornamental details showcase remarkable craftsmanship. The white marble gleams in the sunlight, creating an elegant and timeless appearance.
Another feature that caught our attention was the top of the dome.
Many capitol buildings feature statues crowning their domes, but Minnesota chose something different.
Instead of a statue, a large golden sphere sits at the very top, creating a distinctive silhouette against the sky.
The combination of the dome, the Quadriga, and the classical architectural details makes the Minnesota State Capitol one of the most visually striking capitols we have visited.
Yet as beautiful as the exterior is, the inside somehow manages to be even more impressive.
Inside the Minnesota State Capitol
The interior is where the Capitol truly shines.
The Rotunda
If you’ve followed our U.S. Capitols Challenge, you know that the rotunda is often our favorite part of any capitol building.
The Minnesota State Capitol did not disappoint.
Walking into the rotunda immediately creates a sense of awe.
Our eyes were first drawn to the floor, where an eight-pointed star sits within another star.
The design is beautiful from ground level, but it becomes even more impressive when viewed from above.
The star in the floor is more than just a decorative feature. It represents Minnesota’s nickname, the North Star State, and stands as a symbol of leadership, hope, and direction.
Surrounding the rotunda are statues, murals, decorative details, and elegant architectural features that encourage visitors to slow down and look around.
Then there is the dome itself.
Looking upward reveals stunning shades of blue accented with gold details that seem to stretch endlessly toward the ceiling.
At the center hangs an extraordinary chandelier.
Interestingly, the chandelier does not immediately command attention because it is rarely illuminated. To help preserve the crystals, it is only lit during special occasions.
Even without the lights, however, it remains a spectacular centerpiece.
From the floor below, it appears much smaller than it really is.
In reality, the chandelier measures approximately six feet in diameter, demonstrating just how massive the rotunda space truly is.
Every direction offers another beautiful detail to discover.
Exploring the Chambers
One of the most fascinating aspects of visiting the Minnesota State Capitol is seeing where government continues to operate today.
The Senate Chamber
As we explored the Capitol, the Senate Chamber stood out as one of the most magnificent rooms in the building. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are remarkable.
The details in this room match the importance of the work done here, where senators gather to debate legislation, address state challenges, and make decisions that help shape Minnesota’s future.
For visitors, it offers both an appreciation for the artistry of the Capitol and a glimpse into representative government in action.
The House Chamber
The House Chamber was equally impressive and a close contender for the most ornate room in the Capitol.
The scale of the chamber, combined with its architectural details and historic character, creates a space worthy of the important work that takes place here.
This is where representatives from communities across Minnesota come together to discuss issues, represent their constituents, and help guide the direction of the state.
Standing in the chamber, it is easy to appreciate both the detail of the room and the responsibility carried by those who serve within it.
The Court Chamber
While the Court Chamber may not be as ornate as the Senate or House Chambers, its significance is every bit as great.

The chamber’s more restrained design reflects its purpose, focusing attention on the serious work performed there.

Architectural Details Worth Noticing
One thing we have learned while visiting capitols is that the most memorable details are often the ones that many people walk past.
The Minnesota State Capitol rewards curiosity.
The staircases quickly became one of our favorite features.
The supports beneath the railings reminded us of oversized chess pieces carved from stone.
It is a small detail, but it demonstrates the level of artistry that exists throughout the building.
Every hallway contains decorative elements worth examining.
Every room contains craftsmanship that would be difficult and expensive to recreate today.
The longer we explored, the more we appreciated the talent of the architects, artists, and craftsmen who created this remarkable building.
The View from the Quadriga Platform
If there is one experience we would recommend to every visitor, it is taking the guided tour that includes access to the Quadriga platform.
Standing just feet away from the Quadriga gave us a new appreciation for its size and symbolism.
The four horses represent the natural forces of earth, wind, fire, and water. Two female figures symbolize agriculture and industry, two foundations that helped build the state. The charioteer represents prosperity and proudly holds a banner displaying the name Minnesota.
It’s one thing to admire the sculpture from a distance.
It’s another thing entirely to stand beside it and appreciate the craftsmanship that went into creating such an incredible work of art.
The platform also provides beautiful views of Saint Paul and the surrounding Capitol grounds.
It was one of those moments that made us pause and simply enjoy where we were.
For us, this was the highlight of the entire visit.

Tips for Visiting the Minnesota State Capitol
If you’re planning a trip to Saint Paul, make time to visit the Minnesota State Capitol. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, government, photography, or simply exploring something new, this capitol offers far more than most visitors expect.
One of the best ways to experience the building is by joining a guided tour. The tours provide fascinating insight into the Capitol’s history, artwork, architecture, and symbolism while also granting access to areas that many visitors might otherwise overlook. For us, the highlight was stepping out onto the Quadriga platform, where we could admire the famous golden sculpture up close and enjoy beautiful views of Saint Paul.
Be sure to allow enough time to explore beyond the main tour. The rotunda alone deserves a few extra minutes to fully appreciate the dome, murals, sculptures, and intricate details that surround you. We also recommend spending time in the Senate Chamber, House Chamber, and Court Chamber to gain a deeper appreciation for the work performed within these historic spaces.
After exploring the building, take a walk through the Capitol Mall. The grounds feature monuments, memorials, open green spaces, and excellent photo opportunities. It’s the perfect place to slow down, reflect on your visit, and enjoy a different perspective of the Capitol.
Most importantly, don’t rush. The Minnesota State Capitol is one of those places that becomes more impressive the longer you stay. Look up, look down, and pay attention to the details. Some of the most memorable features are the ones that many visitors walk right past.

Exploring The Capitol Mall
Although the building itself is spectacular, don’t end your visit when you walk outside.
The Minnesota State Capitol sits within the beautiful 18-acre Capitol Mall.
After our tour, we spent time exploring the grounds and discovering additional monuments and memorials.
The grounds provide excellent opportunities for walking, photography, and reflection.
Combined with the beauty of the capitol building itself, the Capitol Mall creates a destination that deserves far more than a quick stop.
The Replica Liberty Bell
One of the unexpected traditions we’ve created during our U.S. Capitols Challenge is searching for the Replica Liberty Bells.
Minnesota’s bell serves as a reminder that while every state has its own unique story, they are all connected through the shared ideals of freedom and independence represented by the original Liberty Bell in Philadelphia.
Finding these bells has become one of our favorite parts of the challenge, adding an extra layer of discovery to each Capitol visit.
Why State Capitols Continue to Amaze Us
Every state capitol has its own personality.
Some are grand and ornate.
Others are simple and elegant.
Some emphasize history while others focus on symbolism.
The Minnesota State Capitol successfully combines all of these elements.
As we walked through its halls, we once again found ourselves amazed by the artistic talent that exists throughout our country.
