Next stop on our Capitol adventure: the Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln!
Driving into Lincoln, Nebraska, the first thing we noticed wasn’t a golden dome; it was a tower. Rising high above the prairie skyline, the Nebraska State Capitol defies the expectations you gather from visiting dozens of other state capitols. There’s no rounded dome here. Instead, this Capitol shoots straight up into the sky, a vertical monument to Nebraska’s bold sense of independence and innovation.
And fittingly, that independence shows up inside as well. Nebraska is the only U.S. state with a unicameral legislature, meaning it has just one legislative chamber rather than two. No House. No Senate. Just one body making decisions for the Cornhusker State.

Built between 1922 and 1932, the Nebraska Capitol is an architectural marvel that breaks tradition in both form and function.

In a state known for its flat, open landscapes, the Capitol’s 400-foot tower stands in sharp contrast to its surroundings, making it visible in all directions.
But the nickname reflects more than just height.
It’s a point of orientation, a source of pride, and a bold declaration that even in wide-open spaces, Nebraska stands tall, rooted in tradition but unafraid to reach upward.
The Nebraska State Capitol is one of only four U.S. state capitols designed like a towering skyscraper instead of the more traditional dome-and-wing layout. (Louisiana, Florida, and North Dakota are the other 3.)

High above the Nebraska State Capitol, perched atop its 400-foot limestone tower, is a striking bronze figure that both defines and dignifies the skyline: The Sower.
Sculpted by Lee Lawrie, The Sower is a 19-foot bronze statue of a man casting seeds by hand, symbolizing Nebraska’s deep agricultural roots and the timeless act of planting for the future.
He wears a tunic with a seed bag slung over his shoulder and steps forward into the wind, a frozen moment of labor, hope, and faith.
What’s fascinating is that The Sower isn’t just decorative, it’s symbolic on multiple levels.
He represents more than just farming; he’s an emblem of Nebraska’s values: hard work, quiet strength, and a commitment to growth over time.
🏛️ Intricate Detailing: Every County Matters
One of the most meaningful design elements of the Nebraska State Capitol is also one of the easiest to miss, until you know to look for it.
Take a close look and you’ll discover a powerful tribute to all 93 Nebraska counties, each one is engraved in limestone around the building’s perimeter.
This is a quiet but powerful declaration: every county of the state matters here.
👤 Honoring Lincoln
Given that Nebraska’s capital city is named after President Abraham Lincoln, it’s only fitting that the Capitol honors him with distinction.
Near the west entrance stands a striking bronze statue of Lincoln, created by sculptor Daniel Chester French.
The Capitol continues to honor Lincoln’s memory not just with statues and inscriptions, but in spirit.
The principles he stood for, equality, democracy, and a government by the people, are reflected in the Capitol’s nonpartisan, unicameral legislature and the way this building tells a story.

Four elemental mosaics, Genius of Earth, Water, Fire, and Air, tell an interwoven story of nature’s power and humanity’s ability to live in harmony with it.
Altogether, the Nebraska State Capitol’s floors, walls, and ceilings create an immersive journey of ideas. Where architecture becomes a medium for teaching, honoring, and inspiring.
It’s a building that thinks deeply, remembers well, and speaks boldly, from the ground beneath your feet to the sky above your head.
⚖️The Power of One: Nebraska’s Unicameral Legislature
Perhaps even more fascinating than the building’s design is what goes on inside.
In 1937, Nebraska abolished its bicameral legislature and became the first, and still only, state to govern with a unicameral system.
💡 How It Happened
The push for a unicameral system came during the Great Depression, when efficiency and cost-saving were more than just political buzzwords; they were survival tools.
U.S. Senator George Norris argued that a single-chamber legislature would be more transparent, more efficient, and less expensive.
And Nebraska voters agreed!
In 1934, voters approved the switch. By 1937, Nebraska’s new unicameral legislature was officially in session, and it has stayed that way ever since!
👥 Nonpartisan by Design
Not only does Nebraska have just one legislative chamber, but its 49 elected lawmakers are also officially nonpartisan.
That means political party affiliations don’t appear on the ballot, and leadership roles are chosen based on merit and collaboration, not party lines.
While senators still hold personal political beliefs, the structure encourages open debate and cooperation. Something increasingly rare in today’s political climate.
You won’t find separate caucus rooms or party whips here. What you will find is a system designed to put policy over politics.

🔔 Bonus: Finding the Liberty Bell in Lincoln
One of our favorite Capitol traditions is seeking out the Replica Liberty Bell, which many state Capitols have somewhere on their grounds. Nebraska is a little different.
Instead of being right outside the Capitol building, Nebraska’s Liberty Bell Replica is located in Antelope Park.
Located a few miles away, this park is a quiet space that adds a peaceful pause to your day of exploring.
We love how each bell visit reminds us that while every Capitol is unique, there are also shared symbols that connect us all: freedom, history, and the pursuit of something greater!
💭Final Thoughts: The Nebraska State Capitol
Nebraska’s Capitol is a shining example that tradition isn’t the only path to greatness.
From its bold architecture to its unique legislative structure, it invites visitors to rethink what government buildings and government itself can look like.
