New York State Capitol: U.S. Capitols Challenge
After visiting all 50 states, we found ourselves asking: what’s next? That’s when a new idea sparked. Why not visit every U.S. State Capitol? We set out on this exciting new adventure, sharing stories from each Capitol to inspire you to explore them too.
Up next on our Capitol challenge: the New York State Capitol in Albany!
Chandler was born less than a mile from the New York State Capitol and spent much of his childhood in Albany, yet he had never stepped inside the Capitol building, until now! Visiting this remarkable place was especially meaningful, not just because it’s his home state, but because its unique architecture and history offer a one-of-a-kind experience.
Join us at the New York State Capitol, where even the staircases have stories to tell! Another captivating stop on our challenge to visit all 50 U.S. State Capitols!
Step by Step: Exploring the Capitol’s Iconic Staircases
There is one thing we’ll remember about the New York State Capitol, besides the sheer scale and stone-carved detail, and that’s the staircases. Not one, not two, but three massive staircases!
We didn’t count every step (though our legs might have), but we soaked in every curve, carving, and detail of the centuries-old stone!
The Great Western Staircase
Let’s start with the showstopper: the Million Dollar Staircase.

Built between 1883 and 1897, it’s a towering masterpiece of hand-carved sandstone and a monument to craftsmanship.
You could spend hours here just studying the stone and still miss a few details!
The stonework is filled with carved faces. Taking time to pause and study the faces as you climb is part of what makes this staircase feel more like a gallery than a passageway.
It’s dizzyingly intricate and arguably one of the most beautiful staircases in the entire country!
The Senate Staircase
Located on the opposite side of the Capitol from the Great Western Staircase, the Senate Staircase immediately strikes a different tone.

It’s darker in both color and mood, with deep stone hues, heavier shadows, and a more solemn atmosphere.
Even with a stained-glass window above letting in colored light, the staircase feels more enclosed and introspective, like stepping into a quieter, more serious side of state government.
It’s easy to imagine lawmakers ascending these steps, deep in thought or debate.
The carved details are more restrained here, but the mood is unmistakable: weighty, historic, and dignified.
The Assembly Staircase
Positioned on the same side of the Capitol as the Senate Staircase, but in the opposite corner, the Assembly Staircase offers a more balanced and approachable feel.

It’s lighter in color and design, with softer natural light, gentle curves, and architectural details that feel welcoming rather than imposing.
While it still features the Capitol’s signature stonework and craftsmanship, the Assembly Staircase doesn’t carry the same weighty mood as its Senate counterpart. Instead, it feels open, steady, and quietly elegant.
Whether you’re climbing for the history, the views, or to get your steps in, these staircases aren’t just functional, they are works of art. Each one tells part of the Capitol’s story, etched in stone and whispered in echoes.
Chambers & Lobbies: Where History Meets Function
After ascending the Capitol’s legendary staircases, we stepped into the heart of legislative action, the Assembly and Senate Chambers, plus the elegant lobbies just outside them.
These connected spaces are more than architectural beauty; they’re the settings where the state’s most important conversations unfold and where history is continually written.
The Senate Lobby and the Assembly Lobby
Just outside each legislative chamber lies a lobby. The lobbies serve as elegant thresholds between the bustle of governance and the quiet anticipation of decision-making.

The Senate Lobby feels refined and echoes the darker tones and formality of the Senate Chamber.
With its deep woods, polished stone, and hushed atmosphere, it feels like a place for last-minute reflection or quiet conversation before stepping into the action.
Though each lobby has its own character, together they capture the rhythm of the Capitol.
The Legislative Chambers
Each chamber is unique, reflecting both the identity of its legislative body and the artistic spirit of the Capitol.

The Assembly Chamber is larger and brighter. Light filters through stained-glass windows, casting a glow that feels warm and purposeful. This space is where 150 elected officials come together to shape policy for millions of New Yorkers.
Together, the chambers and their lobbies reflect the Capitol’s dual personality: bold and ornate, yet functional and alive. These are not just rooms, they are stages where democracy plays out, shaped by architecture that reminds you that what happens here matters.
The Governor’s Reception Room
Tucked away near the Executive Chamber, the Governor’s Reception Room offers a quieter kind of grandeur.

What immediately draws your eyes is the ceiling mural, a striking and unexpected masterpiece that gives the room a sense of depth and drama.
Painted in rich tones and filled with allegorical figures, the mural feels almost like a dreamscape overhead.
Standing beneath that ceiling, it’s easy to feel the weight of leadership and the hope woven into New York’s past and future.
The Flag Room
The Flag Room at the New York State Capitol took our breath away.

Tucked quietly within the grand building, it holds more than just fabric and thread, it holds stories, sacrifice, and silent echoes of courage.
Each flag, once carried into battle by New York soldiers, is carefully preserved in special cases that protect these fragile pieces of history.
You can almost feel the weight of the moments these flags have witnessed.
It’s humbling to stand among them, knowing these banners were once raised in the chaos of war and are now kept with such care and reverence. It’s not just a room, it’s a moment to pause and honor those who came before.
Replica Liberty Bell
One of our Capitol traditions is seeking out the Replica Liberty Bell, so we were eager to find it during our New York visit. However, the bell isn’t housed in the Capitol itself but rather across the street in the State Education Building.
State Education Building

We wished we could have seen the Liberty Bell in New York, but since a reservation was required, we didn’t have time to secure one.
Still, catching a glimpse of the beautiful exterior of the Education Building left us curious about its interior, and reminded us that sometimes the journey sparks new questions and discoveries, even when plans don’t unfold as expected.
Experiencing everything around the Capitol
We thoroughly enjoyed walking around the entire Capitol, soaking in every intricate detail and appreciating all the wonderful sights and experiences it had to offer.
The Empire State Plaza
The Empire State Plaza was absolutely wonderful!

A striking blend of modern architecture and thoughtful design.
Towering granite-clad buildings rise sharply against the sky, their sleek surfaces mirrored perfectly in the calm reflecting pools below.
The iconic Egg, with its unique curved shape, stands as a captivating centerpiece, drawing the eye and inviting curiosity.
Throughout the plaza, art pieces are thoughtfully interspersed, adding bursts of color and creativity that contrast beautifully with the clean lines and open spaces. Walking through the plaza felt like stepping into a living gallery where architecture and art come together to create an inspiring experience.
Corning Tower Observation Deck

Be sure to take time to go up to the Corning Tower’s observation deck.
The bird’s-eye views of the city and surrounding landscape are absolutely stunning!
Best of all? It’s completely FREE!
It’s a perfect way to get a new perspective and soak in the beauty from above.
The Memorials
There are several memorials around the Capitol grounds worth visiting, each honoring important moments and people in history.

Our favorite was the World War II Memorial. Its quiet strength immediately draws you in.
We found it especially meaningful to read the detailed timelines engraved in the stone, tracing the major events and milestones of the war.
Standing there, surrounded by history etched in stone, felt like a powerful reminder of the sacrifice and resilience that shaped the world we live in today.
Lafayette Park
Lafayette Park, located just across the street from the Capitol, was a wonderful addition to our visit.

The flowers were in full bloom, bursting with vibrant colors, while the tall trees stood proudly overhead, creating a serene and refreshing oasis in the heart of the city.
It was a perfect spot to pause, reflect, and soak in the natural beauty surrounding the Capitol.
Final Thoughts: New York State Capitol
We are so grateful for the opportunity to experience the New York State Capitol. As Chandler’s home state, this visit held extra special meaning for us!
While this Capitol doesn’t have the traditional dome design we have seen on so many of the other Capitols, its unique architecture and intricate beauty truly captivated us. Exploring its halls and grounds was a memorable experience that deepened our connection to New York’s rich history and spirit. It’s a reminder that every Capitol has its own story to tell, sometimes in unexpected and remarkable ways.
If you are ever in Albany, don’t miss the chance to explore the New York State Capitol! It’s a place full of history, stories, and surprises waiting to be discovered.
