Why Newfoundland is a Hiking Paradise You Need to Explore

We consider ourselves just average hikers. We genuinely enjoy getting out on the trails, breathing in the fresh air, and feeling that satisfying burn in our legs, but we’re also the kind of hikers who appreciate a comfortable bed at night and a delicious meal at the end of the day. We’re not chasing summits or setting records; we’re in it for the views, the peace, and the moments of quiet joy along the way.

That’s why Newfoundland quickly won us over. With everything from short scenic strolls to all-day endurance routes, this rugged island has something for every type of hiker, even those who prefer their hikes balanced with a bit of rest and reward!

AllTrails

To plan our hikes, we rely heavily on the AllTrails app. This is our go-to digital trail guide.

AllTrails helps us find hikes that match our energy level for the day (and our tolerance for elevation)! Whether we’re looking for something easy and scenic or moderately challenging with dramatic coastal views, AllTrails provides us with the distance, elevation, user reviews, and photos that help us decide what’s “just right.”

Newfoundland’s trail system may be wild and remote in places, but thanks to a little pre-trip downloading and trail research, we always felt like we knew what we were walking into… or at least had a general idea.

📶 Pro tip: Cell service can be hit or miss on the trails, so we always download offline maps before heading out. It’s a small step that can save you a lot of confusion (and backtracking)!

Hiking Options

Just to give you an idea of what’s available for hikes in Newfoundland, we’ll detail a few of our favorites below. These trails offered a mix of stunning scenery, varying levels of difficulty, and a few surprises that kept things interesting.

Whether you’re planning your own adventure or just curious about what “average” hiking looks like on this wild and beautiful island, here’s a closer look at where our hikes took us.

Chamber Cove Trail

One of the most incredible hikes we experienced was the Chamber Cove Trail.

Our map after walking the Chamber Cove Trail.

This trail is a coastal gem that truly took our breath away (in the best way).

With dramatic ocean views, rugged cliffs, and that wonderful feeling of being out in the middle of nowhere, it perfectly captured what we love most about hiking in Newfoundland: wild beauty with just the right amount of challenge.

We were so impressed with the views that we even considered hiking further along the trail. Too bad we didn’t have enough time to keep going!

To give you a sense of how diverse the options are here, just consider this, while we enjoyed our scenic loop at Chamber Cove, you could also choose to tackle the Chambers Cove to Lawn Trail, a 13.9-mile (22.4 km) trek with 2,778 feet (847 m) of elevation gain.

One amazing view along the Chamber Cove Trail.

The Chambers Cove to Lawn point-to-point trail is estimated to take 6 hours and 48 minutes to complete, making it ideal for serious hikers looking for a full-day challenge and panoramic payoffs.

How incredible would that be?!?

Whether you’re looking for an awe-inspiring coastal walk or an endurance test with sweeping views, Newfoundland delivers!

Cape Spear Viewpoint Trail

Another one of our hikes was a much shorter option: the Cape Spear Viewpoint Trail, and honestly, it was astounding!

Cape Spear Lighthouse

This 1.13-mile walk takes you to one of the most iconic spots in Newfoundland: Cape Spear, the easternmost point in North America.

We thoroughly enjoyed this trail, not just for its historic lighthouse and sweeping coastal views, but because we were lucky enough to spot whales offshore as we walked!

There’s something magical about watching whales breach while you’re standing next to a centuries-old lighthouse, sea breeze in your face, and the sound of waves crashing below.

It reminded us that you don’t always have to go far, or uphill, to find something extraordinary. Sometimes, a short walk and a little patience can lead to a front-row seat to nature’s best show.

Cape Spear Path

If you’re up for more, you can actually extend your walk all the way south along the coast, or do what we did and drive partway to experience a section of the trail.

Fisherman pulling in their lobster pots.

We chose to explore a segment of the Cape Spear Path: Maddox Cove to Herring Cove, which offered a peaceful mix of coastal views, wildflowers, and a chance to see the fisherman in action.

This section perfectly captures the flexibility Newfoundland offers hikers.

Whether you want a quick scenic stroll or a longer adventure, there’s something for everyone!

Chance Cove Coastal Trail

The Chance Cove Coastal Trail was absolutely jaw-dropping.

Chance Cove Coastal Trail

We genuinely had no idea the water would be so clear or that the blues would be so vibrant!

It felt like we’d stumbled into a tropical postcard, only with a cool Atlantic breeze and rugged cliffs instead of palm trees.

This 2.09-mile loop isn’t long, but it packs in enough elevation changes and dramatic coastal views to make it feel like a full adventure.

Every twist and turn in the trail revealed something new. Jagged cliffs, hidden coves, wildflowers, and those surreal shades of turquoise and deep blue water. It’s the kind of place that makes you stop, take a deep breath, and say, “Wow, we’re really here.”

We finished the trail feeling overwhelmingly grateful for the chance to experience this corner of Newfoundland!

Seaview Trail Outer Loop

After finishing the Chance Cove Trail, we found another great hike nearby, the Seaview Trail Outer Loop near Norman’s Cove.

Seaview Trail Outer Loop

This 2.07-mile gem was the perfect length, offering breathtaking views and well-maintained paths that made for another unforgettable experience.

We only wished we had packed a lunch to enjoy at one of the picnic tables thoughtfully placed along the trail!

🧠 Mindset Tip: On your next adventure, build in intentional pauses. Whether it’s a scenic bench, a quiet overlook, or a simple picnic spot, let those moments be invitations to reflect, recharge, and realign with why you travel in the first place.

The Care of the Trails

We were extremely impressed with the love and care that Canadians put into their trail systems.

The dedication to maintaining the trails.

The hard work and dedication to keeping these paths functional, safe, and accessible is truly astounding, especially in such rugged, often remote environments.

From well-placed signage to thoughtfully maintained footpaths, it was clear that these trails are not just routes through nature, but reflections of a deep respect for the land and those who explore it.

Every boardwalk, marker, and maintained stair reminded us that hiking here is a shared experience. One built and preserved by people who care!

Along several of the paths we hiked, we noticed signs recognizing the organizations that help support and maintain the trail systems. A great reminder of the community effort that goes into preserving these beautiful places.

Final Thoughts: Hiking in Newfoundland

Looking back, our time hiking in Newfoundland was so much more than just miles on a trail, it was a reminder of how powerful nature can be when you allow yourself to slow down, take in the view, and truly be present.

From short scenic walks to unexpectedly challenging climbs, every step gave us something to remember, whether it was the shockingly blue water, the thrill of spotting whales, or the quiet satisfaction of reaching a lookout and just standing still.

As average hikers, we found everything we could ask for: well-loved trails, breathtaking beauty, and the kind of experiences that linger long after your boots are off. Newfoundland surprised us in the best possible way, and we’re leaving with sore legs, full hearts, and a deep sense of gratitude for the trails, and the people, who made it all possible.

Thank you, Newfoundland!
