Exploring the West Virginia Capitol Complex
The West Virginia Capitol Complex is a visual masterpiece. From its brilliant golden dome to the carefully designed grounds, every detail invites you to stop, explore, and admire.
The West Virginia Capitol is a striking contrast to the state’s rugged mountain landscape. This is a Capitol that invites exploration from every angle. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an architecture lover, or just a curious traveler, the Capitol has something to capture your attention.
The Golden Dome
The Capitol’s dome is an unforgettable sight. It gleams brilliantly in the sunlight and even stands out on overcast days.
Its rich golden hue reflects the care and pride taken in constructing this landmark.
Perched atop the dome is a majestic eagle, perfectly symbolic of the Mountain State’s strength and spirit.

It’s always fun to compare the replicas across states.
What made this replica unique was the engraving of West Virginia in the concrete base. This was a creative and meaningful touch that sets it apart from other replicas we’ve seen.
Inside the Capitol
Once inside, it doesn’t take long to realize how easy it is to get a little lost. The Capitol is designed with long marble corridors and countless offices, giving it the feeling of a labyrinth.
It’s not uncommon to turn a corner and find yourself back where you started, or to stumble upon a quiet hallway lined with portraits of former governors and historic figures.
The Information Center
Before venturing too far, stop by the information center. Not only can you find helpful guidance for planning your exploration, but it’s also a great place to pause and admire the beauty of the interior.
The marble columns beneath the rotunda and the soaring dome above are breathtaking.
They are a work of art. Imagine these columns symbolizing the strength and stability of the state itself.
The Dome

The rotunda is the symbolic heart of the Capitol and a highlight for everyone who visits. Its four sides feature allegorical representations reflecting the state’s core values:

Three branches of West Virginia’s government
Like the federal government, West Virginia operates through three distinct branches: the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial. Each branch plays a unique role in keeping the state running smoothly.
Executive Branch
This branch includes these elected officials:
- Governor
- Secretary of State
- State Auditor
- State Treasurer
- Commissioner of Agriculture
- Attorney General
Together, these six offices form the executive leadership team responsible for overseeing the day-to-day administration of the state. The Executive Branch carries out the laws passed by the legislature.
Legislative Branch: Senate and House of Delegates
The Legislative Branch is responsible for creating state laws and shaping public policy.
It consists of two chambers: the Senate, with 34 members, and the House of Delegates, with 100 members.
The Senate and House of Delegates meet here in the Capitol to debate, draft, and pass legislation that shapes life across the state.
Judicial Branch
