Fountains and Water Features
The sound of splashing water always makes us want to pause and take a moment to reflect.

It’s soothing, almost meditative, and invites you to imagine the countless people who have passed through these doors over the years.
The Capitol has witnessed history unfold, the debates, the decisions, the celebrations, and the quiet moments. Standing near the fountains, it’s easy to feel a connection to that past.
The gentle sound of water creates a serene atmosphere that complements the grandeur of the building itself.
The Replica Liberty Bell
As travelers who enjoy tracking down the Replica Liberty Bell at each state Capitol, we were thrilled to see this one prominently displayed.

It’s always fun to compare the replicas across states.
What made this replica unique was the engraving of West Virginia in the concrete base. This was a creative and meaningful touch that sets it apart from other replicas we’ve seen.
Inside the Capitol
Once inside, it doesn’t take long to realize how easy it is to get a little lost. The Capitol is designed with long marble corridors and countless offices, giving it the feeling of a labyrinth.
It’s not uncommon to turn a corner and find yourself back where you started, or to stumble upon a quiet hallway lined with portraits of former governors and historic figures.
The Information Center
Before venturing too far, stop by the information center. Not only can you find helpful guidance for planning your exploration, but it’s also a great place to pause and admire the beauty of the interior.

They are a work of art. Imagine these columns symbolizing the strength and stability of the state itself.
The Dome
At the center of the marble columns, don’t forget to look up. The dome soars high above, creating a breathtaking sense of space and grandeur.

Hanging from its center is a magnificent chandelier, which at first appears like a single brilliant light.
You’ll find as you move around the rotunda and view it from different angles, you begin to appreciate the full scale and intricate design of this dazzling orb.
The Rotunda
The rotunda is the symbolic heart of the Capitol and a highlight for everyone who visits. Its four sides feature allegorical representations reflecting the state’s core values:

Justice symbolizes fairness, law, and the impartial application of rules.
Decisions must be guided by equity and moral responsibility.
It reflects the Senate’s role in shaping fair laws for the people of West Virginia

Liberty embodies freedom and the protection of individual rights.
Paired with Justice, it highlights the balance between enforcing laws and preserving personal freedoms.

Commerce celebrates economic activity, trade, and industry. All essential for the growth and prosperity of West Virginia.
The House of Delegates is tasked with crafting policies that support business, jobs, and sustainable development.

Education reflects the state’s commitment to knowledge, learning, and civic preparation.
It reminds lawmakers that an informed citizenry is crucial for a healthy democracy.
Together, these four allegorical representations, Justice, Liberty, Commerce, and Education, form the philosophical foundation of the Capitol. Visually reinforcing the core values guiding West Virginia’s government.
Three branches of West Virginia’s government
Like the federal government, West Virginia operates through three distinct branches: the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial. Each branch plays a unique role in keeping the state running smoothly.
Executive Branch
This branch includes these elected officials:

- Governor
- Secretary of State
- State Auditor
- State Treasurer
- Commissioner of Agriculture
- Attorney General
Together, these six offices form the executive leadership team responsible for overseeing the day-to-day administration of the state. The Executive Branch carries out the laws passed by the legislature.
Legislative Branch: Senate and House of Delegates
The Legislative Branch is responsible for creating state laws and shaping public policy.

It consists of two chambers: the Senate, with 34 members, and the House of Delegates, with 100 members.
The Senate and House of Delegates meet here in the Capitol to debate, draft, and pass legislation that shapes life across the state.
Judicial Branch
West Virginia’s Judicial Branch is housed within the Capitol, including trial-level courts to the Supreme Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court. This setup makes the Capitol truly a center of governance, where laws are made, interpreted, and enforced under one roof.
